Ohanaeze Youth Council urges President Tinubu and AGF to discontinue Nnamdi Kanu trial, advocating dialogue, justice, and peace in Southeast Nigeria

The group insists that the prolonged trial has exacerbated tensions and insecurity in Southeast Nigeria rather than resolving underlying issues.

The demand was made in an open letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, signed by OYC National President Igboayaka O. Igboayaka and Secretary General Ifeanyichukwu Nweke.

The youth leaders described the trial as “fundamentally a political case” that cannot be sustainably resolved through legal technicalities alone.

They stressed that the decade-long legal battle has become a rallying point for unrest, anger, and mistrust in the region.

OYC urged President Tinubu to take a decisive and independent stance, calling on the Attorney-General to exercise powers under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution to discontinue the case.

They also recommended initiating a sincere dialogue with Igbo stakeholders, traditional rulers, clergy, youth bodies, and political leaders to address legitimate grievances.

The council argued that releasing Nnamdi Kanu would de-escalate tensions, promote inclusion, and restore trust in the government’s fairness.

They noted that Nigeria’s international reputation is at stake, citing the country’s obligations under human rights and self-determination conventions.

“History places on you a golden opportunity to write your name as a unifier, not a divider. We urge you to heal the wounds of Ndi Igbo through justice, dialogue, and reconciliation,” the statement read.

OYC emphasised that over 50 million Igbo youths are committed to peace and national development if justice is served, echoing the late Ohanaeze President-General Prof. George Obiozor, who previously advocated for a political solution to the matter.
