Ondo State Police Command refutes reports linking First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s convoy to the death of a child, attributing the incident to a hit-and-run driver

The Ondo State Police Command has issued a strong denial regarding reports that a vehicle within the convoy of First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was responsible for the tragic death of a young child in Akure on Thursday.

This clarification comes after Sahara Reporters published a report alleging the convoy’s involvement in the incident.

DSP Olushola Ayanlade, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, released a statement dismissing the report as “false and misleading.”

The First Lady was in Ondo State to launch the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distribute professional kits to midwives when the incident occurred.

“The attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been drawn to a false and misleading report published by Sahara Reporters on April 17. It alleged that the convoy of the first lady, Sen. Oluremi, was responsible for the tragic death of a young girl in Akure,” Ayanlade stated.

According to the police, eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations have confirmed that the incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver operating an unregistered white Lexus vehicle.

“At no point was the first lady’s convoy involved in this tragedy,” stated DSP Olushola Ayanlade, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command.

A witness who saw the incident unfold pursued the fleeing vehicle on a motorcycle, providing crucial information to the police.

Furthermore, the police clarified that the deceased child was seven years old, not nine, as initially reported, highlighting the inaccuracy of the published report. The victim’s parents corroborated the eyewitness accounts, confirming that the First Lady’s convoy was not involved.

The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, personally visited the grieving family to offer condolences and assure them of a thorough and transparent investigation. The police reiterated their commitment to bringing the responsible driver to justice.

“Eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations conducted by the command confirm that the incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver operating an unregistered white Lexus vehicle. And not by any vehicle associated with the first lady’s convoy,” Ayanlade emphasized.

The Ondo State Police Command urges the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports that can cause unnecessary distress and confusion.
