Osun NURTW leader Kazeem Oyewole was killed in Osogbo, prompting police investigation amid rising tension in local motor parks

The Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of Kazeem Oyewole, a former unit chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), in Osogbo.

Oyewole, who served as part-time chairman of the NURTW Aregbe Unit from 2018 to 2022, was reportedly attacked at Elelede Junction in the afternoon by suspected hoodlums.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants, who were allegedly extorting passersby under the guise of raising funds for a proposed carnival, singled out Oyewole during the attack.

A witness, who requested anonymity, described the violent scene: “A motorcycle carrying two people arrived at the junction, and the hoodlums forced them to disembark. They started fighting, and gunshots were fired. Later, they smashed the head of a man identified as Kazeem with big stones. He died on the spot, while the other person escaped with injuries.”

Basira, a shop owner near Elelede Junction, said business activities in the area were abruptly disrupted. “The person who was killed was identified as Kazeem Oyewole by some NURTW members who came after the incident. He was a former part-time chairman along Osogbo/Gbongan Road,” she stated.

Our correspondent observed heightened tension at Old Garage and Aregbe motor parks, with residents avoiding the areas and hoodlums reportedly still present.

Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident and said police had deployed officers to the scene.

“We are aware of the incident at Orita Elelede, and investigation has commenced. We are still monitoring the parks to prevent escalation,” he said.

The killing is the latest in a series of violent incidents involving NURTW leaders in Osun.

Adeboye Ademoroti, another prominent leader, was shot dead in Ilesa under unclear circumstances.

Authorities have urged residents and union members to remain calm as the investigation continues.
