Otakikpo Oil Terminal Commissioning by Tinubu marks Nigeria’s first indigenous crude export terminal in 50 years, unlocking over 40 stranded oil fields

Otakikpo Oil Terminal Commissioning is set for October 8, 2025, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu prepares to officially inaugurate Nigeria’s first indigenous onshore crude oil export terminal in five decades.

Developed by Green Energy International Limited (GEIL), the Otakikpo Terminal, located in Ikuru Town, Rivers State, represents a major national infrastructure leap.

The facility is also the first onshore terminal constructed by a wholly Nigerian company since the Forcados Terminal was commissioned in 1971.

The $400 million project includes an initial storage capacity of 750,000 barrels, expandable to three million barrels, with a loading capacity of 360,000 barrels per day.

GEIL’s Executive Director of Legal and Corporate Services, Olusegun Ilori, described the commissioning as a strategic move that aligns with President Tinubu’s national goal to boost oil production and reduce logistics costs in the energy sector.

The terminal offers a critical evacuation route for over 40 stranded oil fields, potentially unlocking millions of barrels of oil that were previously in accessible due to inadequate infrastructure.

It addresses one of the most pressing challenges in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry—evacuation bottlenecks.

According to GEIL Chairman and CEO, Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe, “What we have achieved here is not just a storage solution, but a game-changing national infrastructure that opens a new pathway for stranded oil fields to contribute to the economy.”

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, and other top government officials and industry leaders are expected to grace the commissioning ceremony.
