The Oyo State Government has sealed off a collapsed building under construction in Dugbe, Ibadan, following concerns over substandard materials and a directive for integrity tests on all outlets of the popular eatery involved

Ibadan building collapse has led to swift action from the Oyo State Government, which on Monday sealed off a construction site in the Dugbe area after a building under renovation collapsed.

The directive was issued by the state Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo, during an on-the-spot assessment of the scene.

Akin-Funmilayo stated that the immediate sealing was crucial to ensure public safety and prevent any further loss of lives and property.

He added that this action would also enable the government to thoroughly assess the situation and produce a comprehensive report on the precise cause of the incident.

The commissioner alleged that some of the building materials used for the construction appeared to be “sub-standard and of low quality,” raising serious concerns about adherence to building codes.

He declared that an integrity test would be promptly carried out on the collapsed structure to prevent any recurrence of such a disaster.

Akin-Funmilayo stressed that the outcome of this crucial test would determine the government’s subsequent actions. “After seeing the extent of the collapse, we decided it has to be sealed off because we have to prevent loss of lives,” he explained.

He further elaborated on the government’s decisive steps: “Professionals from the Ministry of Works would have to come and carry out an integrity test, after which the report would advise us on the next action to be taken on the property.

In addition, this outlet belongs to a popular eatery outfit; I believe the same engineer doing this place handled the other outlets they have in Ibadan and other cities.

But, for this to have happened, it means that we have to carry out an integrity test on all their buildings. If we find out that the other outlets fail the integrity test, we will bring them down, because we cannot afford to toy with the lives of our people.”
