PDP rebuffs Lamido demand as the party says his caretaker proposal breaches its constitution while court appeals over the NWC crisis remain pending

The Peoples Democratic Party has firmly dismissed a proposal by former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido for the dissolution of its newly inaugurated National Working Committee.

The PDP rebuffs Lamido demand after describing his call for a caretaker leadership as unconstitutional and unworkable while legal battles remain unresolved.

Lamido, who recently issued a ten-day ultimatum to the party leadership, had taken the PDP to court over its national convention in Ibadan.

Addressing supporters in Kano, he urged the party to disband the NWC and install a national caretaker committee, insisting that Umar Damagum and Samuel Anyanwu remain the legitimate chairman and secretary until December 2025.

In a pointed response, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said it was ironic that Lamido, having chosen litigation over internal reconciliation, now expected the party to rely on the very internal mechanisms he had previously ignored.

He said the legal landscape had become too complex for Lamido’s suggestion to be feasible.

Ememobong explained that various factions had secured conflicting court judgments, all of which were now before the Court of Appeal.

He said this legal gridlock made it impossible to dissolve the NWC or create a caretaker structure, particularly as the party’s constitution does not provide for such an arrangement.

He added that a political resolution might have been achievable if Lamido had pursued internal dialogue from the start.

The spokesman emphasised that the PDP had made genuine attempts to reconcile with aggrieved leaders, including Lamido.

He said party elders, the Board of Trustees, governors and the NWC had been reaching out nationwide in what he described as a robust peace effort. However, he stressed that reconciliation could only work if all parties approached discussions with sincerity.

According to him, unity cannot be achieved under a mindset that everything must be done according to one individual’s terms. He said it was now up to those being approached to decide whether they were willing to accept the party’s overtures for peace.
