Peter Obi criticises Tinubu for frequent foreign trips, saying the president abandons Nigerians amid insecurity, hunger, and poverty

Peter Obi criticises Tinubu for what he described as excessive foreign travels, accusing the president of abandoning Nigerians at a time of worsening insecurity, poverty, and humanitarian crises.

In a statement on his verified X handle, the former Labour Party presidential candidate expressed concern that President Tinubu had spent a large portion of his two years in office abroad, often on holidays, while citizens endured hunger and insecurity.

“From all indications, our President is not finding his home in Nigeria conducive for a long stay, and it should be concerning to us,” Obi wrote.

He pointed out that just six days after returning from a 15-day trip, the president left again—this time for his annual holiday in France, his 10th trip to the country in two years.

Obi noted that Nigeria is ranked the worst country to give birth, the worst place to live, and with the lowest life expectancy globally. He added that about 79 per cent of Nigerians—over 180 million people—face food insecurity.

“At a time when Nigerians need leadership, empathy, and presence, a President should not choose foreign holidays. No holiday is more important than the Nigerian lives you swore to protect,” Obi stressed.

He also criticised Tinubu for failing to visit crisis-hit states, such as Katsina—where 50 people were killed in a mosque attack—and Niger, where at least 60 women and children died in a recent boat mishap.

“What would it have taken the president to take a less than 30-minute trip to Niger State from Abuja in his jet?” Obi asked.

He urged Tinubu to prioritise healthcare, education, poverty alleviation, and security, arguing that true leadership requires sacrifice and compassion.

“Nigerians deserve a president with all hands on deck to solve these pressing issues,” Obi concluded.
