A powerful abduction rescue in Kwara frees 38 worshippers, but families grow anxious as the government delays their release

Family members of the 38 abducted worshippers from Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Isegun, Eruku, are growing increasingly anxious as the Kwara State Government continues to hold the freed victims in Ilorin—days after their rescue was announced.

The group, seized by bandits during a November 18 thanksgiving service in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area, regained freedom last Sunday after a powerful abduction rescue coordinated by security agencies and the state government.

Three people were killed in the attack, while one sustained gunshot injuries.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq confirmed the worshippers’ release in a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye.

Although details of the operation were not disclosed, Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga insisted no ransom was paid, saying negotiators secured freedom without financial exchange.

However, several days later, the 38 survivors have still not been reunited with their families. Relatives told our correspondent that the delay has heightened emotional strain, despite earlier assurances that the victims were safe.

One relative, speaking anonymously, said the community had expected the worshippers to return immediately after the government’s announcement.

“We celebrated on Sunday when we were told they had been released,” he said. “But since then, they have yet to arrive in Eruku. We miss them, and the wait is weighing heavily on our hearts.”

Another family member said conflicting rumours about the victims’ location had deepened community anxiety. Despite this, she confirmed the relatives had spoken to some of the abductees by phone.

A senior government source revealed  that the victims were being kept in an undisclosed hotel while undergoing medical and psychological evaluation.

“They went through severe trauma,” the official said. “The government wants to ensure they receive the best care before they return home.”

The official reiterated that no ransom was paid, warning that paying criminals would send the wrong signal.

“People should commend the government for ensuring the abducted worshippers were freed unhurt,” he added. “They will soon be reunited with their families.”

Residents of Eruku say they appreciate the government’s intervention but are eager to welcome the victims home and begin proper community healing.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Government has remained silent on the reasons for holding the worshippers. Commissioner for Communication Bolanle Olukoju promised to revert with details but did not respond to follow-up inquiries.

Security sources suggest the victims may still be undergoing post-trauma debriefing in a secure facility.
