Shocking Anambra market fire sparks concern as an electrical surge destroys shops despite swift response from firefighters

According to officials on Friday, a Shocking Anambra market fire erupted in the early hours at Nkwo Enugu Ukwu Market Square in Njikoka Local Government Area, destroying valuables and intensifying worries after a string of similar incidents across the state.

The blaze, which began around 3 am, affected provision shops and stacks of roofing materials. Witnesses said the fire spread quickly following what many believe was a sudden electrical surge that triggered sparks from appliances within the market.

Shop owners who rushed to the scene discovered that several items had already been consumed by the flames before firefighters managed to contain the situation.

One trader, who preferred not to be named, blamed long standing poor electrical connections for the outbreak.

She said many owners received frantic calls in the night but could do little as the fire tore through the area. She added that the financial loss was extensive and devastating for the victims.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, said a distress call came in at 3:43 am.

Fire crews were deployed immediately and began suppression efforts shortly after arrival. Preliminary findings indicated that sparks from an electrical appliance, triggered by a power surge, caused the fire.

Chiketa said the quick and coordinated response ensured the destruction was confined to a single shop and that no casualties were recorded.

Fire crews withdrew at 4:46 am after fully extinguishing the blaze. He urged all traders and residents to undertake comprehensive electrical inspections to prevent similar disasters.

This latest incident marks the sixth fire outbreak reported in less than one week across Anambra State. Recent cases include a petrol tanker explosion near the Ozubulu Local Government Secretariat that killed one person and destroyed six shops, a factory fire in Nnewi, and another early morning inferno that gutted multiple shops in a commercial building at Nodu Market in Awka South.

Authorities say the repeated outbreaks underscore the need for stricter compliance with electrical safety standards and more vigilant maintenance within markets and industrial areas.
