Thousands gather for the Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi burial as top Nigerian leaders pay their final respects to the revered scholar

According to reports from Bauchi on Friday, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi burial drew thousands of mourners, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and several state governors who gathered to offer funeral prayers for the renowned Islamic scholar.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other federal and state officials were also in attendance as dignitaries joined ordinary citizens to honour the cleric’s remarkable influence on Islamic learning and spiritual leadership.

Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, the supreme leader of the Tijjaniyya movement in Nigeria, died in the early hours of Thursday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, following a brief illness.

He had been admitted the preceding day. His passing at the age of ninety six marked the end of a lifetime dedicated to Qur’anic scholarship and spiritual mentorship that reached far beyond Nigeria’s borders.

Born in Gombe in 1927, the late scholar devoted decades to teaching, guiding followers, and strengthening the Tijjaniyya tradition. His voice, widely respected for its depth and clarity, shaped religious discourse across the region and inspired generations of students.

The atmosphere at the funeral was marked by deep reverence, with mourners describing his death as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of spiritual leadership.

Many expressed gratitude for his teachings and lamented the loss of a figure whose influence had become a unifying thread within the Islamic community.
