Real Madrid has officially withdrawn from the European Super League, following Barcelona’s exit and fan backlash, bringing the controversial breakaway competition to an official end

Real Madrid has formally pulled out of the European Super League, marking the official end of the controversial breakaway project. Earlier this month, FC Barcelona also withdrew, leaving no clubs supporting the league.

The Spanish giants confirmed that they reached an agreement with UEFA on February 11, signaling a return to the traditional European football structure and resolving legal disputes tied to the proposed Super League.

A statement from Real Madrid reads:

“After months of discussions held in the interest of European football, UEFA, the European Football Clubs (EFC), and Real Madrid C.F. announce that they have reached an agreement in principle for the good of European club football, respecting sporting merit and emphasizing long-term sustainability of clubs and improvement of the fan experience through technology.”

The Super League, first proposed in 2021, faced intense backlash from fans, players, and football governing bodies. England’s six Premier League clubs withdrew within days, followed by Italian teams and Atletico Madrid. Juventus also exited, leaving only Real Madrid and Barcelona defending the project until now.

Barcelona’s recent withdrawal not only isolated Real Madrid but also strengthened their ties with UEFA.

The two Spanish giants’ relationship has been strained amid the ongoing Negreira case involving alleged sporting corruption, in which Madrid has called for sanctions against Barcelona.
