Remo Stars relegation after NPFL title sees defending champions drop to NNL in shocking turnaround following 2025/26 season

Remo Stars have been relegated to the Nigeria National League, NNL, in a stunning turn of events that sees the former Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, champions set an unwanted record after dropping out of the top flight just one season after winning the title.

The Sky Blue Stars confirmed their relegation on Sunday after a 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on the final day of the 2025/26 NPFL season.

The NPFL title marks a historic and painful decline, as Usman Abdallah’s side became the first club in NPFL history to win the league and suffer relegation the following season.

The result left the team in 17th position with 47 points from 38 matches, sealing their drop into the second tier despite a hard-fought campaign.

Elsewhere, El-Kanemi Warriors, Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists also lost their NPFL status after failing to accumulate enough points to survive the season.

Their places in the top flight will be taken by Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Doma United and Ranchers Bees, who earned promotion from the Nigeria National League.
