Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has defended his decision not to substitute Cristiano Ronaldo in the 1-1 draw against DR Congo, calling him the best goalscorer in history as the 2026 World Cup campaign begins

Roberto Martinez, the head coach of  Portugal explained his decision to leave Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch for the full 90 minutes during their opening 2026 World Cup Group stage match against DR Congo.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner failed to inspire a victory as Portugal were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw, prompting widespread criticism from fans and pundits who claimed the 41-year-old Al Nassr forward is now holding the team back.

Martinez, however, leapt to the defence of his star player. “It made no sense at all to take off Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the best goalscorer in history, off the field when we were looking for goals,” he said after the match.

The Portuguese coach described Ronaldo as still the best footballer in the world and insisted that keeping him on was the logical choice as Portugal chased a winning goal in the later stages.

Ronaldo will now look to rediscover his best form when Portugal face Uzbekistan in their next Group stage fixture.

The result has placed early pressure on the European side, who were among the pre-tournament favourites.
