Sahara Group’s energy transition drives impact with gas, renewables, and ESG in its 2024 sustainability report focused on Africa’s green future

Sahara Group’s energy transition has taken centre stage in the company’s newly released 2024 sustainability report, reaffirming its dedication to Africa’s clean energy future with gas and renewables leading the charge.

Titled “Beyond Energy: Fostering Africa’s Sustainable Future,” the report aligns with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards and reflects Sahara Group’s alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

According to Ejiro Gray, Director of Governance & Sustainability, Sahara’s strategy hinges on gas as a transition fuel and growing investments in renewable energy infrastructure.

“Sustainability is the engine of transformation for our business and the communities we serve,” Gray said.

She added that the Group is also implementing nature-based carbon mitigation efforts and innovating to drive operational efficiency, embedding sustainability deeper into decision-making across the company’s upstream, midstream, downstream, and power businesses.

In 2024, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) risk management became fully institutionalised within Sahara Group.

This evolution is helping Sahara not just report on sustainability, but actively integrate it into its business DNA.

“Sustainability is a journey, and we remain unwavering in our drive to go beyond energy — for Africa and the world,” Gray emphasized.

The report highlighted powerful impact figures:

• 4.3 million+ man-hours worked with zero lost-time injuries
• 612,498 kg of CO₂ emissions avoided via recycling
• Over 210,000 kg of recyclables recovered
• ₦43.5 million paid to 1,000+ waste collectors under the Go Recycling program
• 75,000+ lives impacted through 13 PCSR projects across 11 countries

Sahara is also reforesting and protecting biodiversity in Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Dubai, training over 11,000 students in green entrepreneurship at the University of Lagos, and dedicating 3% of operational spend to community development through its Host Community Development Trust.

Bethel Obioma, Head of Corporate Communications, emphasized Sahara’s commitment to a sustainability-led Africa.
