Sanwo-Olu launches Badagry electrification project to improve power supply, boost businesses and strengthen infrastructure in Lagos border communities

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday commissioned major electricity infrastructure projects in the Badagry axis, describing the initiative as a strategic investment aimed at transforming energy supply and stimulating economic growth in border communities.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Deputy Governor Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, unveiled the electrification projects during a ceremony attended by government officials, lawmakers and community leaders in Badagry.

The infrastructure includes three high-capacity tower crossings, the rehabilitation of 33KV distribution lines along the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridors, and the connection of 51 transformer substations designed to resolve longstanding electricity challenges in the area.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the intervention was not merely about unveiling new power installations but about restoring confidence among residents and businesses that have endured years of unreliable electricity supply.

The governor explained that the Sanwo-Olu Badagry electrification project aligns with the administration’s THEMES+ Development Agenda, particularly the commitment to expanding energy access and strengthening resilient infrastructure across Lagos State.

“This intervention aligns strongly with our THEMES+ Development Agenda, particularly our commitment to expanding energy access and building resilient infrastructure that supports economic growth across every part of Lagos State,” Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor added that the recent inauguration of the Board of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission has positioned the state to regulate and expand electricity distribution more effectively.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu noted that improved power supply would allow traders to extend business hours, enable artisans and small manufacturers to boost productivity, and support schools and healthcare facilities to operate more efficiently.

The electrification project is expected to strengthen electricity distribution across the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridors, delivering more stable power to thousands of homes, shops and businesses across Badagry’s border communities.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasised that Badagry remains a critical economic gateway linking Nigeria with the Republic of Benin and other West African markets, making sustained infrastructure investment essential for trade and cross-border commerce.

The governor congratulated residents of Gbaji, Seme, Owode, Apa and neighbouring communities, urging them to safeguard the new installations from vandalism to ensure long-term benefits.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, Honourable Sabur Akanbi Oluwa, described the electrification project as a major step toward expanding reliable electricity access in Lagos.

Honourable Sabur Akanbi Oluwa said the strengthened power infrastructure would stimulate economic activities, improve community security and raise living standards in the affected areas.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr Biodun Ogunleye, explained that the project was initiated to tackle persistent electricity challenges in the Badagry axis.

Mr Biodun Ogunleye said the newly installed infrastructure would boost power distribution capacity and significantly improve electricity supply across the communities.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Mineral Resources, Engineer Abiola Olowu, described the project as a milestone reflecting the state government’s commitment to delivering critical energy infrastructure that supports socio-economic development in Lagos.
