Sanwo-Olu press freedom support highlighted as Lagos reaffirms commitment to media independence and democratic accountability

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to press freedom and democratic accountability, declaring that a free and responsible media remains central to governance, transparency, and national development.

The message, delivered on the governor’s behalf by Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, marked the 2026 observance of World Press Freedom Day.

“I wish to assure you that the Lagos State Government will continue to support initiatives that promote press freedom, protect journalists, and strengthen democratic accountability,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The Sanwo-Olu press freedom support statement framed the occasion as an opportunity for reflection within both the media and governance space, urging stakeholders to reassess their commitment to the principles of a free press.

Anchored on the theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security,” the governor emphasised the media’s defining role in shaping public discourse, strengthening institutions, and advancing sustainable development.

“A free press remains one of the strongest pillars of democracy as it gives voice to the voiceless, holds leaders accountable, and serves as a vital bridge between the government and the people,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu also called on journalists to uphold professionalism, particularly amid ongoing reforms and shifting socio-economic realities in Nigeria.

“More than ever, the current realities in our country make it imperative for members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to remain committed to objective, balanced, and professional reporting,” he added.

While reiterating the government’s openness to engagement, he stressed that an informed society is essential to stability, peace, and inclusive growth.

The governor further raised concerns about emerging threats within the information ecosystem, describing misinformation, disinformation, economic pressures, and safety risks facing journalists as significant challenges requiring urgent attention.

“These challenges call for stronger collaboration among government, media practitioners, civil society, and other stakeholders to safeguard the integrity of our information ecosystem,” he said.

With Nigeria approaching another electoral cycle, Sanwo-Olu underscored the heightened responsibility of the media in shaping national conversations, urging adherence to ethical journalism and fairness.

He also called for sustained investment in media literacy and support structures to enable journalists to operate independently and effectively.
