Sokoto IRS withdraws earlier mandate for monthly e-filing, confirming only annual electronic tax returns are currently required under law

The Sokoto State Internal Revenue Service (SOIRS) has rescinded its directive on compulsory monthly electronic tax filing, clarifying that only annual tax returns must currently be filed electronically in compliance with the Nigerian Tax Administration Act, 2025.

The clarification was issued on Thursday in response to widespread concerns following a January 5 circular that initially mandated monthly e-filing.

According to Bilal Muhammad, a SOIRS staff member, the reversal was necessary because “the implementation framework for monthly e-filing is still in progress and has not yet been fully operationalised.”

The notice advised taxpayers to “disregard any reference to compulsory monthly e-filing until further official notice,” while reaffirming that annual electronic filing remains mandatory and aligned with national tax provisions.

SOIRS described electronic filing as a cornerstone of modern tax administration, designed to improve efficiency, transparency, accuracy, and ease of compliance.

“The Sokoto State Internal Revenue Service remains committed to providing continuous support and guidance to all taxpayers to ensure smooth and effective compliance, as we collectively work towards strengthening tax administration and service delivery in the state,” the notice added.
