South Africa secured a dramatic 3–2 win over Zimbabwe in Group B of AFCON 2025, advancing to the knockout stage behind Egypt

South Africa booked their place in the 1XBET Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 knockout stage after edging Zimbabwe 3–2 in a thrilling Group B clash on Monday.

Bafana Bafana’s victory ensured they advanced from the group, finishing second behind Egypt.

Zimbabwe, fearless and determined, twice drew level but ultimately fell short.

The match began with South Africa taking the lead through Tshepang Moremi, whose deflected effort set the tone for a high-tempo contest.

Zimbabwe responded when Tawanda Maswanhise produced a moment of individual brilliance to equalise midway through the first half.

The second half intensified the drama. Lyle Foster restored South Africa’s lead with a composed header, only for Zimbabwe to level again after an unfortunate own goal by Aubrey Modiba.

As the game seemed destined for a draw, VAR awarded South Africa a penalty for handball in the 82nd minute.

Oswin Appollis calmly converted, sending goalkeeper Washington Arubi the wrong way to secure a decisive 3–2 lead.

Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams then made crucial late saves to deny Zimbabwe any chance of a comeback, preserving South Africa’s victory.

With the win, South Africa progresses to the AFCON 2025 knockout stage, while Zimbabwe’s campaign comes to an end.
