Tanimu Turaki emerges as the PDP Northern consensus candidate for National Chairman ahead of the party’s November convention in Ibadan

Tanimu Turaki consensus candidate has been announced by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in the North ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, SAN, was chosen as the consensus candidate after a crucial meeting of Northern PDP leaders held in Abuja on Wednesday night.

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who made the announcement, said the decision was reached unanimously by major stakeholders across the northern region to foster unity within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“After extensive deliberations, we have agreed on Barrister Tanimu Turaki as the Northern consensus candidate. This decision is aimed at strengthening party cohesion.

Any aspirant not satisfied with this resolution reserves the right to proceed to the convention,” Governor Fintiri stated.

Turaki’s emergence places him ahead of other notable contenders, including former Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Makarfi, and ex-Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who had earlier been seen as strong favourites for the position.

Party insiders described the consensus arrangement as a strategic and unifying move, reflecting renewed efforts to stabilise the PDP’s leadership structure and rebuild public confidence after recent internal divisions.

With the national convention approaching, attention is now shifting to how Turaki’s candidacy will shape the power dynamics within the PDP and influence preparations for the 2027 polls.
