Veteran Yoruba broadcaster, comic actor and presenter Timothy Agboola, popularly known as “Ereke Ni Shop”, has died.

Timothy Agboola died on Wednesday at a private hospital in Lagos after a prolonged illness, according to associates and colleagues who confirmed the development.

The news of the entertainer’s passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from admirers, fellow broadcasters and figures within the Yoruba entertainment community.

One of his associates, Idris Shogbola, announced the death in a social media post, describing the late presenter as a respected figure in broadcasting and comedy.

“May the soul of our boss rest in peace.
Pa Timothy Agboola ‘Ereke ni Shop’.
Baba Oloye Repete… A broadcaster, actor, comedian.
May God Almighty give you eternal rest in peace. Amen.
Ereke ni Shop sun re o,” Shogbola wrote.

Agboola was widely recognised for his distinctive storytelling style and sharp humour, which helped make him a beloved voice among listeners of Yoruba radio entertainment.

Throughout his career, Timothy Agboola built a powerful reputation as a promoter of Yoruba culture and tradition, often weaving cultural values and social commentary into his comedic performances. He was particularly known for celebrating the heritage of the Ijesa people.

The late broadcaster collaborated with several entertainers during his career, including Baba Alajeju, with some of his comedic recordings dating back to the 1970s.

Agboola was also widely regarded as a protégé of the late Yoruba comedy legend Gbenga Adeboye.

After Adeboye’s death, he became one of the personalities who helped sustain the vibrant Yoruba variety entertainment style popularised by the comedy icon.

In broadcasting, the veteran entertainer was known for his work as a presenter on Faaji 106.5FM, where his humour and engaging storytelling attracted a loyal audience.

Beyond radio, Agboola also appeared in several Yoruba films, frequently portraying witty and humorous characters that reflected his charismatic personality.

Reports suggest that he had been battling a mysterious illness for some time and was receiving treatment prior to his death, though details surrounding his medical condition remain limited.
