Tobi Amusan begins 2026 season with a second-place finish in the 200m at Jamaica’s Velocity Fest, clocking a season-best 23.25 seconds

World record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, made an impressive start to her 2026 season, finishing second in the women’s 200m at the Velocity Fest in Jamaica.

Amusan clocked a season-best time of 23.25 seconds, showcasing her versatility on the track beyond her specialty in hurdles.

She finished behind Jamaican sprint legend Elaine Thompson-Herah, who won the race in 22.61 seconds, while Ackera Nugent secured third place in 23.35 seconds.

The performance marks a promising start for Amusan as she builds momentum ahead of major international competitions.

This was her first race since the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she earned Nigeria’s sole medal, a silver in her signature 100m hurdles.

Amusan is confirmed to compete in the Prefontaine Classic on July 4 in Eugene, Oregon, returning to her specialty, the 100m hurdles.

The event, part of the Diamond League series, will feature top competitors including reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell, two-time world champion Danielle Williams, and World Championships bronze medallist Grace Stark.

The 28-year-old has previously achieved remarkable success at Eugene, winning her first world title and setting the current 100m hurdles world record of 12.12 seconds during the 2022 World Championships. She also claimed the Diamond League final title there in 2023.

Over the past decade, Amusan has dominated her discipline, winning three consecutive Diamond League finals from 2021 to 2023, cementing her status as one of the most consistent and elite hurdlers in the world.
