Toyota US-built models will enter the Japanese market next year as the automaker moves to ease trade tensions with the United States

Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corporation has announced plans to begin importing three US-built models into Japan next year, a move widely seen as an effort to ease trade pressure from the United States.

The decision comes amid sustained criticism from US President Donald Trump, who has imposed sweeping import tariffs to boost American manufacturing and cut the country’s large trade deficit.

Trump has repeatedly accused Japan of unfair trade practices, arguing that while Japanese automakers sell millions of vehicles in the United States, American cars struggle to gain a foothold in Japan.

Toyota said the Camry sedan, Highlander SUV, and Tundra pickup truck, all manufactured in the United States, will go on sale in Japan from next year.

In a statement, the company said the move aims to meet diverse customer needs while helping to improve Japan–US trade relations.

Toyota is the second-largest automaker by sales in the United States, where it sold more than 2.3 million vehicles last year.

By contrast, American brands have recorded weak sales in Japan.

General Motors sold fewer than 1,100 vehicles in the country last year, while Ford Motor Company exited the Japanese market nearly a decade ago.

Industry analysts say differences in road size, consumer preferences and vehicle design have limited demand for American cars in Japan.

Toyota said the Tundra, in particular, reflects core elements of American automotive culture.

The announcement follows Toyota’s pledge last month to invest $10 billion in the United States, reinforcing its commitment to the American market amid rising trade tensions.
