Troost-Ekong admits he misses the Super Eagles deeply after retirement, saying he still feels emotionally connected to the national team

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has spoken emotionally about life after international football, revealing that he still deeply misses the Nigerian national team following his retirement in December 2025.

The 32-year-old defender, who led Nigeria’s defence for several years, said his connection with the Super Eagles remains strong despite stepping away from international duty.

Troost-Ekong described the national team environment as family-like, noting that the bond he shared with teammates has been difficult to replace.

Speaking on the Bassey Talks Podcast, he admitted that watching the Super Eagles now often triggers emotional memories of his playing days.

He said he still remembers the feeling of stepping onto the pitch in Nigeria’s green and white jersey and representing the country on the global stage.

The former captain explained that although he carefully considered retirement and has no regrets, the emotional attachment to the team remains powerful.

Troost-Ekong added that seeing the current squad in action makes him feel like he wants to return to the pitch and share those moments again.

His international career began in 2015 under late coach Stephen Keshi and saw him become one of Nigeria’s most dependable defenders.

He formed a strong defensive partnership with Leon Balogun, popularly known as the “Oyinbo Wall,” and went on to earn 83 caps for Nigeria.

Troost-Ekong also played a key role in Nigeria’s run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, where he scored three goals and was named Player of the Tournament despite the team finishing as runners-up.

He retired with a total of eight international goals and multiple honours, including an Olympic bronze medal and AFCON silver and bronze medals.
