Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has become one of the standout stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after his heroic performance against Spain triggered a dramatic surge in his global popularity.

The 40-year-old shot-stopper helped World Cup debutants Cape Verde secure a historic goalless draw against Spain, earning the nation its first-ever point at the tournament.

His outstanding saves, including key stops against Spain’s young star Lamine Yamal, earned him the Player of the Match award and widespread international acclaim.

Following the match, Vozinha’s social media presence experienced a rapid rise, with his Instagram following increasing from just over 50,000 to more than 7.6 million within 24 hours.

The sudden growth was further amplified after Brazilian broadcaster CazéTV encouraged fans to follow the goalkeeper, turning him into a viral sensation across platforms.

The performance marked a defining moment in Vozinha’s long and unconventional football journey, which began professionally at the age of 25 with Batuque in Cape Verde.

He has since played across several countries, including Portugal, Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, and Slovakia, building a reputation as a reliable and experienced goalkeeper.

His only major club honour came in the 2018/19 season when he won the Cypriot Cup with AEL Limassol.

At international level, Vozinha has been a key figure for Cape Verde since 2012 and played a central role in the country’s qualification for its first-ever World Cup.

Speaking after the match, the emotional goalkeeper said the moment represented a lifelong dream, adding that he nearly quit football before continuing his journey.

He dedicated the achievement to his teammates and expressed gratitude for their collective effort in reaching the milestone.
