Uba Sani Christian Pilgrimage Approval ends 11-year suspension as 50 Kaduna Christians cleared for holy journey

Uba Sani has approved 50 Christians from Kaduna State to embark on holy pilgrimage, ending an 11-year suspension of the programme.

The approval marks the restoration of the Christian pilgrimage scheme, which was halted during the administration of Nasir El-Rufai when the Christian Pilgrims Welfare Agency was scrapped.

The decision at the time generated controversy within sections of the Christian community.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Kaduna State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev Ma’aji Bawa, commended the governor for what he described as a bold and inclusive step.

Rev Ma’aji Bawa said the Uba Sani Christian Pilgrimage Approval had restored hope among Christians in the state.

He described the move as a significant first step after more than a decade of suspension.

Although only 50 beneficiaries were approved, Rev Ma’aji Bawa expressed optimism that the number would increase in subsequent exercises.

He said the initial batch should be seen as a foundation for broader participation.

Rev Ma’aji Bawa stressed that pilgrimage is a sacred spiritual obligation rather than a recreational venture.

He said those selected would pray for peace, unity and development in Kaduna State and across Nigeria.

The cleric described the reinstatement of the scheme as symbolic and spiritually significant.

He said it demonstrates government recognition of the role of faith in promoting social cohesion.

Rev Ma’aji Bawa, however, called for transparency and fairness in the selection process. He urged that only spiritually committed and responsible individuals be chosen to represent the state.

He also appealed to Christians in Kaduna to remain law abiding and supportive of government initiatives aimed at unity and development.

Rev Ma’aji Bawa said believers have a duty to pray for leaders and the progress of the state.

Observers say the Uba Sani Christian Pilgrimage Approval could strengthen relations between the Kaduna State Government and the Christian community, while fostering renewed confidence and harmony across the state.
