UK Nigeria strategic partnership deepens as King Charles hosts Tinubu, pledging stronger ties on security, trade and regional stability

Britain’s monarch, King Charles III, has reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to a stronger UK Nigeria strategic partnership, hosting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a state banquet in Windsor Castle.

In a speech delivered during the high-profile event, King Charles III outlined plans for deeper cooperation between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, focusing on security collaboration, trade expansion and regional stability.

The monarch emphasised Britain’s readiness to support Nigeria in tackling security challenges, particularly in the northern region, referencing ongoing assistance to strengthen Quick Reaction Forces and humanitarian interventions in conflict-affected areas.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s example of religious coexistence, noting its importance in countering divisions often exploited by insurgent groups.

Describing Nigeria as an economic powerhouse and cultural force, King Charles III acknowledged the country’s growing global influence and its pivotal role in shaping Africa’s future.

He pointed to Nigeria’s population of over 230 million people, with a significant youth demographic, as both a powerful asset and a pressing challenge in addressing employment, security and development needs.

Beyond security, the speech underscored expanding economic ties under the UK Nigeria strategic partnership framework.

Nigerian financial institutions are increasingly leveraging London as a global base, while British investments continue to flow into Nigeria’s infrastructure, including ports, supported by UK Export Finance.

Trade relations have also strengthened, with Nigeria emerging as the United Kingdom’s largest export market in Africa in early 2026.

King Charles III further noted the strong travel and cultural exchanges between both nations, revealing that Nigerian visitors spent £178 million in Britain in 2024, while more than 251,000 British travellers visited Nigeria during the same period.

The monarch praised the Nigerian diaspora in the United Kingdom, estimated at over half a million people, describing it as a vital bridge contributing significantly to sectors such as healthcare, business, sports and the arts.

While acknowledging historical complexities in bilateral relations, he stressed a forward-looking partnership grounded in equality, mutual respect and shared values.

He also reaffirmed the role of the Commonwealth as a platform for collaboration, aligning with Nigeria’s broader push for increased intra-Commonwealth trade and regulatory cooperation.
