UNILAG Medicine Alumni donation sees Class of 2004 invest over ₦10m to renovate a lecture room at CMUL, Idi-Araba

Alumni of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Class of 2004, have invested over ₦10 million to renovate a lecture room at the institution, marking their 20th anniversary.

The upgraded facility was unveiled during a reunion held on the Idi-Araba campus in Lagos on Wednesday, themed “20 Years Strong: Our Journey So Far.”

Speaking at the event, Dr Olayemi Dawodu, Chairman of the reunion, said the project was designed to improve learning conditions and support the future of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

Dr Dawodu said the alumni considered the intervention a meaningful way of giving back to the institution that trained them.

The renovated lecture room now meets international standards, with smart televisions, uninterrupted power supply supported by inverters, and a modern learning environment.

Beyond infrastructure, discussions at the reunion focused on the growing impact of artificial intelligence in medicine and dentistry.

Dr Dawodu said technology could help close the gap created by the shortage of medical specialists in rural and underserved communities.

She explained that AI-enabled tools could support remote diagnosis and enhance access to quality healthcare, while still relying on professional medical judgement.

Panellists at the event also examined the ethical dimensions of AI in healthcare, describing its use as powerful but requiring responsible oversight.

Member of the local planning committee, Dr Dipo Ayedun, said the alumni valued collaboration with colleagues in the diaspora to expose students to global perspectives.

He added that such partnerships strengthened mentorship and professional development.

The Class of 2004 also announced plans to launch a structured mentorship programme for medical students and young doctors.

The alumni pledged continued investment in medical education and research at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, describing the initiative as a lasting legacy.
