Virgil van Dijk delivered a dramatic 100th-minute winner, as Liverpool FC defeated Everton FC 2–1 in the first Premier League Merseyside derby held at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Van Dijk Seals Liverpool Derby Victory came in added time, breaking Everton hearts in the 248th meeting of the historic rivalry and securing a vital victory for Arne Slot’s side.

The match had swung back and forth in a tense atmosphere, with Mohamed Salah opening the scoring for Liverpool before Everton responded through Beto to level the contest.

Salah had earlier given Liverpool the lead against the run of play after converting a cross from Cody Gakpo, marking his ninth goal in Merseyside derby history, the most by any player in the Premier League era.

Everton thought they had taken the lead themselves when Iliman Ndiaye found the net in the first half, but the goal was ruled out after VAR adjudged Jake O’Brien to be offside in the build-up.

The hosts eventually drew level when Beto finished off a cross from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, setting up a tense final phase of the match.

Liverpool were also forced into a late change after goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili suffered an injury, with Freddie Woodman coming on for his first Premier League appearance since 2021 due to Alisson Becker’s absence.

As the game edged towards a draw, Van Dijk rose highest in the 10th minute of added time to meet Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner, sending Liverpool fans into celebration and sealing all three points.

The result strengthens Liverpool’s position in the Premier League, as they move seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification.
