Wema Bank rewards teachers with N4.5m in its Wema@80 campaign, celebrating educators who inspire change and shape future generations across Nigeria

Wema Bank has rewarded teachers who have made remarkable contributions to education, distributing N4.5 million in prizes as part of its Wema At 80 Teachers Day Campaign.

The event, held at the bank’s headquarters in Marina, Lagos, was themed “Celebrating Teachers with a Legacy of Impact.” It recognised educators whose work continues to shape generations of students across Nigeria.

Speaking at the ceremony, the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Moruf Oseni, described teachers as the “unsung heroes behind every great achievement.”

“Today, we are honoured to celebrate our educators — the teachers who have impacted lives. We celebrate their resilience and dedication, especially as we mark 80 years of empowering communities and driving positive impact,” Oseni said.

He explained that the Teachers Day Campaign forms part of Wema Bank’s broader commitment to investing in education and fostering community development.

The winners included Abraham Ngobiri, founder of Teens-Train, who received ₦2 million; Mrs. Esther Adesada, founder of Heritage X Foundation, who earned ₦1.5 million; and Ms. Taiwo Alabi, founder of Educycle, who went home with ₦1 million.

Ngobiri, whose platform focuses on mentoring and counselling teens, expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying it reignited his passion for teaching.

“For many years, teachers have given their all quietly, and what Wema Bank has done today makes us feel seen and valued,” he said.

Adesada described the award as “a huge motivation”, noting that it came at a time when she had been struggling with self-doubt.

“It’s a reminder that no matter the challenges faced, the impact of a teacher never goes unnoticed,” she added.

Alabi said being recognised by Wema Bank meant a lot to teachers across the country, calling it a powerful gesture that validates their efforts.

Launched in September 2025, the Wema At 80 Teachers Day Campaign invited students and alumni nationwide to share 80-second videos celebrating exceptional teachers. Ten educators were shortlisted, with three emerging as winners following a rigorous selection process.

Over the years, Wema Bank’s Teachers Day initiative has evolved into a nationwide movement, investing over ₦20 million in awards and mentorship programmes, reaching more than 3,000 students and 10 schools.
