Wushu in Nigeria continues to flourish as Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai celebrates the sport’s role in cultural exchange and youth development

The rise of Wushu in Nigeria has received fresh recognition from the Chinese Ambassador, Yu Dunhai, who described the sport as a symbol of cultural harmony and shared values between both nations.

Speaking at the finals of the Chinese Ambassador’s Cup Wushu Championship in Abuja on Friday, Dunhai said Wushu reflects more than physical discipline — it mirrors the deep cultural philosophies that unite China and Nigeria.

“Wushu is a precious treasure of Chinese culture. It not only builds our bodies but also shapes our character and spirit,” he said. “Its core values — self-discipline, self-improvement, and mutual respect — align perfectly with Nigerian ideals of hard work and social harmony.”

The ambassador noted that Wushu in Nigeria has “taken root and flourished,” with practitioners emerging from both urban and rural communities.

He linked the sport’s growing appeal to China’s Global Civilisation Initiative and the broader China–Africa cooperation framework.

Citing the outcomes of the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation, Dunhai recalled the agreement between Presidents Xi Jinping and Bola Tinubu to strengthen cultural and sports exchanges, declaring 2026 as the China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.

“This is a significant moment for every Wushu enthusiast,” Dunhai said, announcing that the sport would feature at the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games, a milestone for Africa’s martial arts community.

He urged Nigerian athletes to see Wushu as “more than a sport” — a means of promoting cultural understanding and embodying the spirit of China–Nigeria friendship.

“The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria will continue to support the development of Wushu in Nigeria,” he added, promising collaboration with the National Sports Commission to create more opportunities for training and exchange.

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, praised the Chinese Embassy’s consistent support, describing Wushu as a promising avenue for youth empowerment.

“Wushu is gaining ground in Nigeria, and with continued support, it will create another path for our youths to achieve their dreams. Now that it’s reaching the Olympic level, we’ll take it even more seriously,” Dikko said.

The championship concluded with Justice Unanka, Naima Sanusi, Goodluck Emmanuel, and Winnifred Agara claiming gold medals across various categories, as spectators at the National Stadium celebrated a vibrant display of skill, discipline, and unity.

With Wushu in Nigeria gaining momentum, both countries see the sport as a new bridge for diplomacy, culture, and youth engagement — one that continues to grow stronger with every exchange.
