Zamfara Governor Lawal explores political options for 2027 amid PDP leadership legal disputes, while reaffirming loyalty to the party

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State is reportedly exploring his political options ahead of the 2027 general elections amid ongoing legal disputes affecting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the national level.

Lawal has begun consultations with party stakeholders across all 14 Local Government Areas of Zamfara to assess the implications of the PDP’s internal challenges.

His spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, told Channels Television on Tuesday, March 3, that the consultations are in response to persistent legal uncertainties surrounding the PDP’s national leadership. Idris emphasised that the governor has not made any final decision about leaving the party.

Senior Special Assistant on Broadcast Media, Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, confirmed that Lawal remains committed to the PDP but noted that pending Court of Appeal cases relating to the party’s national convention in Ibadan and the leadership of Tanimu Turaki (SAN) have created uncertainty.

Kaura added that the revised timetable for the 2027 general election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is also under consideration.

Kaura said if the Appeal Court validates the PDP national convention and confirms the leadership, the uncertainty would be resolved.

Otherwise, Lawal may explore alternative political platforms to secure a viable ticket for the 2027 elections.

Lawal is one of only three remaining PDP governors nationwide. His cautious approach has attracted attention amid reports of defections by other key party figures to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor has faced criticism from civil society groups over rising insecurity in Zamfara, including a suspected bomb explosion along the Yar’Tasha–Dansadau road in Maru Local Government Area.

The Northern Front for Peace and Accountability accused the governor of failing to contain repeated terror attacks that have left residents vulnerable in several communities.

Despite these challenges, aides insist Lawal’s consultations reflect strategic planning rather than a commitment to defect.
