Nigeria South Africa WAFCON 2024 semi-final ended in dramatic fashion as Michelle Alozie scored in the 94th minute to seal a 2-1 victory for the Super Falcons.

The win, at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, sends Nigeria into the final and keeps their unbeaten record in the tournament intact.

The Super Falcons started strongly, nearly scoring in the fifth minute through Jennifer Echegini’s powerful strike. Despite dominating play, it was a 44th-minute penalty from captain Rasheedat Ajibade that gave Nigeria the lead at half-time.

The goal marked her third against South Africa in her career.

South Africa equalised in the 59th minute when Linda Motlhalo confidently converted a penalty, reviving hopes for the defending champions. Nigeria responded with tactical substitutions, including Christy Ucheibe and Deborah Abiodun, to strengthen their midfield.

As the match approached extra time, Alozie unleashed a long-range shot in the 94th minute that beat the goalkeeper and sparked wild celebrations. “It was instinctive. I just went for it,” Alozie said after the match.

The victory avenges Nigeria’s 2022 group-stage loss to South Africa and highlights their quest for a 10th WAFCON title.

With Chiamaka Nnadozie, Osinachi Ohale and Ashley Plumptre anchoring the defence, Nigeria remain the favourites heading into the final against either Morocco or Ghana on 26 July.
