PlayStation 5 price hike hits US gamers as Sony raises console costs by \$50, citing tariffs and a tough economic climate

PlayStation 5 price hike has become a reality for US gamers, as Sony announced it is increasing the retail cost of its flagship console by $50 due to tariffs and what it called a “challenging economic environment.”

The standard PS5 will now sell for \$550, the Digital Edition at \$500, and the high-end Pro model at \$750. Isabelle Tomatis, vice president of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said, “Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment.”

This move follows negotiations between Japan and the Trump administration, which reduced a threatened 25% tariff to 15%. Still, the costs remain heavy for Sony.

The company earlier warned that tariffs could cost it up to \$680 million in the current fiscal year.

Sony is not alone. Estee Lauder expects a \$100 million hit in 2026 from tariffs, while PepsiCo may raise soda prices by 10% due to aluminum costs. Monster Beverages is also weighing price hikes in what its CEO described as a “complex and dynamic customs landscape.”

The US Commerce Department recently expanded tariffs on steel and aluminum, extending them to hundreds of products, from tableware to child seats.

Since returning to office, President Trump has imposed duties on nearly all US trade partners.

For now, economists say the full ripple effects of these tariffs are still unfolding. Some businesses have stockpiled goods ahead of tariff enforcement, while others, like Sony, are passing costs directly to consumers.
