Revised national counter-terrorism strategy approved; Tinubu to launch updated security roadmap in October to combat evolving terror threats

Revised national counter-terrorism strategy has reached a critical milestone as President Bola Tinubu prepares to officially launch the updated framework in October.

This development follows a thorough review process aimed at aligning Nigeria’s security policies with modern threats and regional expectations.

According to Maj Gen Adamu Laka, National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the revised document has been finalized and submitted to National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu for final approval.

“This launch will mark the culmination of our collective efforts and the beginning of a new phase in our national counterterrorism expedition,” Laka announced at the Q3 stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja.

The review process, initiated in February 2025, was driven by the evolving nature of terrorism  including the rise of advanced technology, unconventional tactics, and exploitation of socio-economic weaknesses.

Through a comprehensive and inclusive approach, the strategy was refined with input from government agencies, security services, civil society, academia, traditional leaders, and international partners.

The adoption of both the “Whole of Government” and “Whole of Society” frameworks ensures the strategy is robust, people-centered, and globally aligned.

“The true measure of success lies in its faithful implementation,” Laka added, emphasizing that collective action is key to achieving real impact through the strategy’s five pillars Prevent, Protect, Identify, Prepare, and Implement.

Commodore Ahmad Madawaki, Director of Policy and Strategy at the NCTC, reaffirmed the inclusive nature of the review and hinted at an imminent formal launch event, pending the President’s availability.

”Nigeria’s role as a Regional Centre of Excellence for counterterrorism in West Africa and the Sahel raises the stakes, with the revised strategy positioned not just as a national asset but as a regional model for tackling violent extremism.

“Its success has implications far beyond our borders,” Laka stated confidently.
