Osaze De Rosario opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a powerful header, followed by Alex Roldan’s penalty in the 84th and Paul Rothrock’s late goal to seal the win.

The Sounders’ tenacious defense kept Miami’s star-studded lineup, led by eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi, largely at bay.

The match was marred by a heated post-game brawl triggered by Luis Suarez, who was caught on camera apparently spitting at a Seattle assistant coach during the chaos.

Despite the unsettling end, Seattle celebrated their first Leagues Cup triumph, a milestone that completes their collection of every major North American soccer trophy.

The victory was especially sweet for Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer, who praised his team’s resilience against one of the world’s best squads.

“It’s a lot. It’s against one of the best teams in our league, in the world, with Messi the best player in the world,” Schmetzer said.

De Rosario’s goal thrilled the home crowd of 69,314, setting a new attendance record for the Leagues Cup and for a Sounders game at Lumen Field.

Despite Miami’s pressure in the second half, Seattle held firm, with Roldan’s penalty and Rothrock’s late strike extending the lead.
