Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan will return to the Senate after her six-month suspension ends, her lawyer confirms

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, is scheduled to return to the National Assembly later this month following the completion of her six-month suspension.

Her lawyer, Victor Giwa, confirmed the development during an interview in Abuja.

Giwa disclosed that the senator is currently on vacation in London but has finalised plans to resume legislative duties once the Senate reconvenes on September 23.

“Actually, she’s ready to resume her term. She’s in London. Everything is in place, and the six months have expired. The only thing left is her resumption,” Giwa told The PUNCH.

He also clarified that there is no anticipated resistance from the Senate leadership.

“We have been told that even the leadership of the Senate is ready to welcome her. So that’s the situation at the moment. There is no obstacle at all,” he added.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6 for alleged insubordination after she resisted a unilateral decision to change her seat in the chamber.

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions recommended the disciplinary action, which included revoking her access to aides, office space, and salary entitlements.

However, the senator maintained that the suspension was politically motivated and tied to her sexual harassment petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio—a claim dismissed by the upper chamber.

Despite obtaining a favourable court ruling that backed her reinstatement, the Senate insisted the suspension would remain until the six-month term elapsed.

An earlier attempt to re-enter the National Assembly in July ended in a dramatic standoff.

Security operatives blocked her entry while supporters gathered outside in protest.

Now that the suspension has officially ended, Giwa believes any pending legal action is “academic.”

“Everything will be resolved. Even the court cases will become like an academic exercise,” he said.

Efforts to get comments from Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu and Akpabio’s media aide were unsuccessful, as both declined to respond to inquiries.

As Senator Natasha prepares to resume her duties, observers will be watching closely to see how her return impacts Senate dynamics, especially given the controversy surrounding her suspension.
