NYSC Provides Lagos N14bn Services annually through its corps members deployed across the state, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, has revealed.

During a courtesy visit to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Government House, Marina, Nafiu disclosed that over 44,000 corps members contributed to various sectors, with their services estimated to be worth more than ₦14 billion every year.

According to a statement by the NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the DG highlighted the immense value corps members bring to education, healthcare, and other essential services in Lagos.

“General Nafiu was quantifying, in minimum monetary value, the contributions of the over 44,000 Corps Members deployed to the length and breadth of the State in various capacities, including 333 medical doctors, 306 pharmacists, 274 nurses, and 7,188 teachers,” the statement said.

He noted that NYSC Provides Lagos N14bn Services with Lagos being the top choice for corps members due to its relative safety and opportunities.

Many parents, he added, also prefer their children to serve in the state.

The DG praised the Sanwo-Olu administration for recent renovation works at the temporary orientation camp in Iyana-Ipaja and expressed hope for the swift completion of the new 10,000-capacity permanent camp.

He said this would eliminate the current practice of relocating some corps members to neighbouring states due to space constraints.

General Nafiu also appealed for continued support from the state, particularly requesting an ambulance for the NYSC Secretariat in Lagos to enhance emergency responses and welfare during the service year.

Beyond operational needs, he commended the Lagos State Government for projects like the remodelling of the National Theatre, describing it as a national cultural landmark and a symbol of Lagos’ leadership in arts and heritage.

The NYSC Provides Lagos N14bn Services figure reflects the long-standing impact of the scheme, which was established in 1973 by General Yakubu Gowon to promote unity and national integration after the civil war.
