Antonio Conte’s team took the lead in the 28th minute through Lorenzo Lucca, before Sebastiano Esposito struck in the second half to pull Cagliari level.

Under competition rules, the tie proceeded straight to a penalty shoot-out after 90 minutes.

The tension increased when Cagliari’s fourth taker, Mattia Felici, struck the crossbar. Napoli had the chance to clinch victory soon after, but David Neres saw his effort saved by Elia Caprile.

Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic made the decisive stop in sudden death, denying Zito Luvumbo with Cagliari’s tenth penalty.

Alessandro Buongiorno converted the final kick to send Napoli through.

The win pushed the Serie A champions into the last eight, where they will face the winners of January’s tie between Como and Fiorentina.
