Badagry Local Government declares seven days of mourning for Akran Menu-Toyi I, who led the kingdom for nearly 49 years, preserving culture and unity

The Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, has announced seven days of mourning for the late Akran of Badagry, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, who passed away on Monday, January 12.

Hunpe, speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kriko Augustine, said the mourning period was approved by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“With profound sorrow, I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, after a long, dignified, and impactful reign devoted to peace, unity, and the preservation of Badagry’s rich cultural heritage,” Hunpe stated.

The chairman described the monarch as a revered custodian of tradition and a moral compass for the people of Badagry, calling him “a living bridge between the past and the future.”

Hunpe urged residents to reflect on the late Akran’s selfless leadership, timeless values, and lifelong devotion to Badagry, Lagos State, and Nigeria during the mourning period.

Condolences were extended to the royal family, the Council of Obas and Chiefs, and all residents of Badagry.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a condolence message, described the passing of the monarch as a painful loss and the end of an era defined by wisdom, cultural preservation, and commitment to the development of Badagry.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also expressed deep sorrow over the death of the traditional ruler.

Menu-Toyi ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, and served as the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs until his demise, reigning for nearly 49 years.
