President Tinubu transfers VIP protection to NSCDC; agency seeks 30,000 recruits to handle increased security demand

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the withdrawal of 11,566 policemen from the protection of very important personalities (VIPs) and tasked the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) with the new responsibility.

The move aims to allow the police to concentrate on core law enforcement duties.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said on 23 November 2025 that “VIPs who want police protection will now request well-armed personnel from the NSCDC.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, immediately complied with the directive, redeploying the officers to critical policing assignments.

The directive comes amid historical challenges, as previous IGPs since 1999 struggled to maintain VIP withdrawals due to political pressures.

This time, President Tinubu issued the order personally and paired it with a practical solution through the NSCDC.

The NSCDC has requested presidential approval to recruit an additional 30,000 personnel to meet the growing demand for VIP protection.

An officer of the corps said, “The CG and the minister have met with the president. They explained the need for more personnel, especially with the increasing demand for VIP protection. The president has given his word that justice will be done to the request.”

The decision has faced some resistance, notably from members of the National Assembly.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio reportedly pleaded with the president to rescind the order during the 2026 budget presentation, citing concerns from affected VIPs.

Experts say the move reflects strong political will and is in the national interest.

Analysts note that the policy underscores the broader need to strengthen policing and paramilitary services in Nigeria, ensuring that security resources are not concentrated on a select few.

Observers argue that the success of the new arrangement will depend on adequate recruitment, proper training, modern equipment, and welfare support for NSCDC personnel.
