Asisat Oshoala challenges CAF’s focus on Morocco, urging fairer hosting opportunities across Africa and regional co-hosting of tournaments

Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala has criticised the Confederation of African Football for repeatedly concentrating major tournaments and awards in Morocco.

Asisat Oshoala, a six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year, made the remarks on Thursday via X.

The Al Hilal Women forward questioned when CAF’s apparent preference for Morocco would end. She described the trend as repetitive and uninspiring.

Oshoala said nearly all major African football activities now take place in Morocco. She added that the country appears to have become CAF’s unofficial headquarters.

The Nigeria international argued that other African nations deserve opportunities to host continental competitions. She urged countries to show greater ambition and readiness.

She insisted Nigeria could host the Africa Cup of Nations with neighbouring support.

Oshoala named Cameroon, Ghana, Benin and Togo as realistic co-host partners. She said proximity makes joint hosting practical with genuine commitment.

Her comments followed Morocco’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. The hosts defeated Nigeria 4 to 2 on penalties on Wednesday.

The semi-final ended goalless after regulation and extra time at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat. The victory sent Morocco into the final.

The result marked Morocco’s first AFCON final appearance in 24 years. The team last reached the final in 2002.

Morocco is hosting the 35th TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

CAF cited strong infrastructure, organisation and football culture for the selection.

The tournament forms part of Morocco’s wider sporting ambition. The country will also co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
