The Apapa diesel tanker crash caused panic in Lagos as residents scooped spilled fuel from an overturned tanker near Tincan Liverpool Bridge

A diesel tanker accident at Tincan Liverpool Bridge in Apapa, Lagos State, on Monday morning triggered a dangerous scramble as residents rushed to collect fuel spilling from the overturned vehicle.

The Apapa diesel tanker crash occurred when a truck carrying diesel lost balance and fell beneath the bridge, releasing its contents onto the roadway and surrounding area.

Within minutes, people gathered at the scene, using bowls, buckets and other containers to scoop the fuel despite the obvious risk.

Video footage shared by Channels Television showed individuals bending under the bridge to collect diesel flowing from the tanker, even as traffic slowed and the scene grew increasingly chaotic.

Channels Television reported that the tanker overturned at the busy Apapa corridor, a major hub for port and commercial activity in Lagos.

Witnesses at the scene said no emergency responders were present at the time of the incident, raising concerns about public safety and the possibility of fire.

Diesel is highly flammable and can ignite easily when exposed to sparks, heat or open flames.

The absence of authorities heightened fears among residents and commuters, particularly given Nigeria’s long history of fatal tanker explosions linked to fuel scooping.

Such incidents have repeatedly resulted in loss of life and extensive property damage across the country.

As of the time of reporting, officials from emergency services and traffic agencies had yet to secure the area or evacuate civilians from the spill site.

Residents were urged to exercise extreme caution and stay away from the accident scene to prevent a potentially devastating outcome.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns over road safety, tanker regulation and emergency response in Lagos, where fuel-related accidents remain an alarming and recurring threat.
