Amaju Pinnick NFF future clarified as the former federation president confirms he will not seek a return to office

Former Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick has firmly ruled out any return to the leadership of the country’s football governing body, ending years of speculation over a possible third term in office.

The declaration offers a decisive closure to lingering debates around his political future in Nigerian football administration.

Speaking during an interview with News Central TV in Morocco, Pinnick said that although he remains eligible and capable at 55 years old, he has no desire to seek the NFF presidency again. He stated clearly that returning to the role is not an option he is considering.

Pinnick led the NFF between 2014 and 2022, completing two full terms that coincided with Nigeria’s growing influence in continental and global football politics.

During that period, he also served as First Vice President of the Confederation of African Football and as a member of FIFA’s organising committee for international competitions.

Reflecting on his time in office, Pinnick said he was satisfied with his eight year tenure and believes leadership renewal is essential for institutional progress.

He noted that the focus should now be on strengthening the federation by addressing its weaknesses and improving governance structures.

The Amaju Pinnick NFF debate over a third term intensified after his exit in 2022, following a turbulent period marked by legal disputes and political tension surrounding the federation’s electoral process.

He was eventually succeeded by Ibrahim Gusau, the Zamfara FA chairman, who emerged as the 40th NFF president at the federation’s 78th elective congress.

Although Pinnick had previously argued that he was eligible to contest again based on his interpretation of NFF statutes, the idea drew criticism from several quarters.

Former Minister of Sports Solomon Dalung was among those who insisted that tenure limits enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution should apply to sports federations.

Before the 2022 elections, the Federal Government intervened to stabilise the situation, directing that the NFF congress be held at the expiration of the board’s tenure and that statutory amendments be made to widen stakeholder participation.

Court cases threatening to derail the process were also withdrawn to ensure a smooth and lawful transition.

With Pinnick now definitively closing the door on a comeback, attention shifts to the future of the federation under its current leadership, while his statement reinforces the principle of leadership succession in Nigerian sports administration.
