Lagos State warns residents against assuming unauthorised chieftaincy titles, citing jail terms under the Obas and Chiefs Law

The Lagos State Government has warned residents against assuming chieftaincy titles without official approval.

It said offenders would face arrest and prosecution under the Obas and Chiefs Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr Bolaji Robert, issued the warning on Tuesday.

Robert described the rising trend of self-proclaimed traditional rulers as unhealthy and dangerous.

He said the practice causes tension, confusion, and communal crises across the state.

According to him, the use of royal titles such as Oba, His Royal Majesty, or His Royal Highness without approval is illegal.

He said the situation has reached an alarming level despite repeated government interventions.

Robert cited Sections 15, 16, 17, 18, and 20 of the law, which outline procedures for filling chieftaincy vacancies.

He said the ministry remains the only authority empowered to approve chieftaincy titles in Lagos State.

The commissioner added that Sections 21 and 23 prohibit the use of royal paraphernalia by unauthorised persons.

These include beaded crowns, beaded shoes, staffs, and horse whisks.

Robert said the state government would now enforce the law strictly.

He warned that any chieftaincy title conferred without the governor’s approval is null and void.

Offenders risk up to two years imprisonment as prescribed by law.

He urged individuals currently holding unauthorised titles to desist immediately.

Failure to comply, he said, may result in legal action.

Robert also called on residents to report illegal chieftaincy conferments to the ministry or security agencies.

He said the measures would protect the integrity of traditional institutions in Lagos.

The steps, he added, would also preserve the state’s cherished culture and traditions.
