Iran Nigeria World Cup friendly possible in March as Team Melli prepares; match depends on FIFA ruling on Super Eagles’ eligibility case

Iran are considering Nigeria as a potential opponent for an international friendly in March as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

According to the Tehran Times, Iran’s football authorities are finalising pre-tournament fixtures and have opened discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation, alongside another CONCACAF nation, Costa Rica.

“The federation has been in negotiations with the football federations of Costa Rica and Nigeria to arrange two warm-up matches in March,” the report stated.

The proposed friendly follows earlier announcements indicating Iran would face European sides Spain and Portugal in other preparation fixtures.

Iran have been drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand.

For Nigeria, any March engagement hinges on FIFA’s imminent ruling regarding the Super Eagles’ eligibility protest against DR Congo.

Nigeria lost direct qualification after a 4-3 penalty shoot-out defeat in the African play-off final in November 2025.

The Nigeria Football Federation lodged a complaint on December 15, claiming six Congolese players were ineligible due to recent changes in international allegiance.

FIFA’s decision is expected Monday, February 16, 2026.

NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi expressed confidence in the case, saying, “We have a good case. We do not venture into what would be an exercise in futility. We are awaiting FIFA’s decision.” Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi added, “We are still waiting; hopefully, we can go to the World Cup.”

Should FIFA rule in Nigeria’s favour, the team would advance to the six-nation intercontinental play-off tournament in Mexico, limiting opportunities for friendlies.

A ruling against Nigeria, however, would free the calendar and allow the proposed Iran encounter.

Alternative African opponents, including Senegal, were reportedly explored, but no agreements have been finalised.
