Kano Singer Market fire relief sees FG and governors release N8bn to help victims rebuild businesses and restore economic activity

The Federal Government has approved N5 billion to support victims of the Kano Singer Market fire disaster, while the All Progressives Governors Forum (APGF) pledged an additional N3 billion, bringing total relief to N8 billion.

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed the intervention during a sympathy visit to the market on Monday.

Speaking in Kano, Shettima said the funds aim to help victims rebuild businesses and restore economic activity in the historic market. “President Bola Tinubu has approved the release of N5 billion to the Government of Kano State as palliative towards this incident.

The Progressive Governors Forum, under the leadership of Governor Hope Uzodimma, has also pledged N3 billion in support of the victims,” he stated.

The fire broke out on Saturday evening, February 14, 2026, in the Gidan Glass section of the market along Ado Bayero Road, and raged into Sunday morning.

The blaze affected over 1,000 shops and left seven traders feared missing.

Emergency responders from NEMA, the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Fire Service, and other agencies eventually contained the fire, which officials linked to a possible solar battery explosion.

Describing the incident as a national tragedy, Shettima said the fire was “not only a loss to Kano State but to the entire federation.”

He was accompanied on the visit by the governors of Jigawa, Kebbi, and Imo, offering prayers for the victims and appealing to Almighty Allah to prevent similar disasters.

Chairman of the Singer Market Traders Association, Junaid Zakari, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the “timely and generous gesture,” pledging that the funds would be used judiciously to support affected members and restore market activities.

The fire marks the second major blaze at the market in less than two weeks, underscoring the vulnerability of the commercial hub to such incidents and the urgent need for safety measures.
