Gyokeres, 27, joined Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon last summer but has struggled to replicate his previous form in the English Premier League. Despite some improvement this year, Arsenal fans expected more from the Sweden international.

Speaking to Sky Bet, Lescott suggested that Arsenal missed the chance to sign Chelsea’s Joao Pedro or Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike.

“I thought Viktor Gyokeres was brought in to start for Arsenal, play in all the big games,” Lescott said. “They brought in Gyokeres because they thought he was the best of the available strikers. It’s easy to say now that Arsenal should have gone for Hugo Ekitike. Joao Pedro is another striker I don’t know why Arsenal didn’t buy.”
