EU Emergency Iran Talks convened after US and Israeli strikes trigger Iranian retaliation and heighten fears of wider Middle East conflict

The European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has announced EU Emergency Iran Talks after United States and Israeli military strikes on Iran prompted retaliatory attacks and intensified fears of a broader regional conflict.

Kaja Kallas confirmed that foreign ministers from the 27-member bloc would convene an extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council via video link on Sunday to assess the rapidly deteriorating security situation across the Middle East.

In a statement published on X, Kaja Kallas warned that escalating hostilities risked dragging the region into a wider war, condemning what she described as indiscriminate Iranian attacks against neighbouring states.

The diplomatic intervention followed coordinated strikes on Saturday by the United States and Israel targeting facilities in several Iranian cities, including the capital, Tehran, where explosions and rising smoke were reported.

United States President Donald Trump said Washington launched the operation to eliminate what he called imminent threats posed by Iran.

In a recorded video message, Donald Trump confirmed that American forces had begun major combat operations, pledging to dismantle Iran’s missile capabilities and naval assets.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described Israel’s participation as a preventive strike aimed at neutralising emerging security risks.

Iran responded with a barrage of missile and drone attacks targeting United States positions in the region.

The United States Central Command stated that its forces successfully intercepted hundreds of incoming projectiles during the retaliation.

According to Pentagon officials, no American casualties or combat-related injuries were recorded, while damage to military installations was described as minimal and without operational impact.

Diplomatic observers say the EU Emergency Iran Talks represent an urgent attempt by European leaders to contain the crisis and prevent further escalation in an already volatile region.

The outcome of Sunday’s meeting is expected to shape Europe’s collective response, including possible diplomatic or security measures.
