Alex Otti Air Force Base Approval grants 100 hectares at Abia Airport site for Nigerian Air Force training facility

The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has approved 100 hectares of land within the Abia Airport project site for the Nigerian Air Force to establish a training base in the state.

The approval followed a request by the Air Force for an expansion of the 50 hectares previously earmarked for the project.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.

According to the statement, the governor granted the approval on March 10 while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Air Force Ground Training Command led by its Commander, Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Gabriel Kehinde.

Alex Otti thanked the Air Force for choosing Abia State as the location for the proposed facility, noting that the base would be situated within the premises of the airport currently under construction.

The governor explained that the airport project is a partnership between the Abia State Government and the Federal Government.

He stated that the state government is responsible for the runway, while the Federal Government is handling the airport terminal.

“We expect the runway to be ready very soon. The terminal can come in as time goes on,” Alex Otti said, describing the new base as a strategic step that would strengthen security in the region.

He also assured the visiting delegation that the renovation of the Air Force office in the state would be completed before the end of April so that the Chief of Air Staff could formally take possession of the facility.

Earlier, Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Gabriel Kehinde commended the Abia State Government for supporting the military and improving security in the region.

He noted that reports reaching the command show that security in the state is orderly and improving.

The Air Force commander also proposed the development of a Special Forces Training Centre at the site, which would support jungle warfare operations and enhance operational readiness across the South-East.

He appealed for the prompt processing of the Certificate of Occupancy for the land, explaining that the facility would strengthen security operations and expand the Air Force’s presence in the region.
