Benue Lassa fever update shows no deaths in 11 days, with suspected cases rising to 383 amid strengthened health measures

Benue State Government has confirmed that no deaths from Lassa fever have been recorded in the past 11 days, despite a rise in suspected infections, officials said on Wednesday.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ogwuche, disclosed that suspected cases have increased to 383, with 47 confirmed infections, while the cumulative death toll since the outbreak remains at 14.

Dr. Ogwuche said only six new cases were confirmed within the last 11 days, signalling a significant slowdown in the infection rate.

He added that 20 patients are currently in isolation, including 14 at Benue State University Teaching Hospital and six at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.

The commissioner attributed the improved situation to intensified awareness campaigns, early detection, and ongoing support from health partners, including the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the World Health Organization.

“The rates have dropped drastically because we are actively tracing suspected cases,” Dr. Ogwuche said.

“Those who test positive are few compared to before. Surveillance is ongoing across all 23 local government areas, and our health workers are trained in infection prevention and control. Early detection and community tracking have contributed to the low mortality.”

He added that the government has provided substantial funding, while laboratories are fully operational to detect infections early and initiate treatment.

“We have not recorded any outbreak in the IDP camps. Flyers and educational materials will soon be distributed to all 15 camps in the state to further strengthen awareness,” he said.

Dr. Ogwuche praised the collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health and international partners, saying the combination of sensitisation, health education, and early intervention has been pivotal in controlling the spread of Lassa fever.
